Changing the Storage Tier of a physical disk on Nutanix CE

When installing Nutanix Community Edition on my lab server, I noticed that my RAID card prevents AHV from correctly recognizing the type of some of my hard disks.

Don't try this at home

The technical indications given in this article are intended for a test environment and not for a production environment. Contact the Nutanix Support first!

Indeed, the Storage Tier of my 800Gb disks is recognized as HDD and not as SSD which can have repercussions on the mechanism for switching hot and cold data.

To correct this defect, I connected to the CVM and typed the following command to display all of the node disks :

ncli disk ls

Looking through the list, I found my 5 misrecognized 800Gb drives. :

800Gb SSD detected as HDD in ncli disk ls
On top, the 800Gb SSD recognized as a HDD

To correct this issue, I’ve used this command line :

ncli disk update id=0005eaec-42f3-4321-3032-a4bf0150cfca::19 tier-name=SSD-SATA

Of course, you must replace the ID with that of your disk and that you can find via the first command.

Once the command has been validated, you will see that the Storage Tier of the disk has been changed:

Disk Storage Tier changed to SSD
The updated Storage Tier

Change that you can also see on Prism Element, in the Hardware > Disk section:
